Samsung launched its next-generation smart wearable devices, the Gear Fit 2 Pro and the Gear Sport, in India on Wednesday. While the Gear Fit 2 Pro has been launched in India at a price of Rs 13,590 the Gear Sport will cost buyers Rs 22,990. Both the wearable devices will be available for buying only online via Samsung’s own e-store, Flipkart and Amazon India starting from December 11, the company has announced. Pre-bookings start from December 4.Both the Gear Fit 2 Pro and the Gear Sport, to recall, were first announced ahead of IFA 2017 in Berlin alongside a pair of updated Gear Icon X wireless ear-buds. Samsung, for now, hasn’t launched the 2018-edition of the Gear Icon X in India.Gear Sport dumps the Gear S3’s style for fitness-tracking substanceThe Gear Sport, according to Samsung, is not a Gear S3 replacement. The Gear S3, launched by Samsung last year, still remains to be the king in the North as far as the South Korean major’s trysts with fitness/smart wearable technology is concerned. With the newly launched Gear Sport, Samsung is only looking to give — fitness conscious — buyers one more option to invest in its fitness/smart wearable technology ecosystem: an ecosystem that’s still trying hard to figure out its loyalties. The Gear Sport, as far as first impressions are concerned, looks like a fitness tracker masquerading as a smartwatch, and that’s a good thing.Unlike the Gear S3, the Gear Sport is lighter, thinner, lacks cellular connectivity, and is also swim-proof. It’s also relatively more affordable than the top-tier Gear S3. Samsung has also gone ahead and made healthy collaborations with Speedo, Under Armour and Spotify to make its new fitness/smart wearable more relevant. Of these Spotify isn’t available in India for now.advertisementThe Gear Sport, because it is 5 ATM-certified, is “safe to wear while walking in the rain or showering, and may be used for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or the ocean. However, the Gear Sport should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth,” according to Samsung. And while you’re at it, you can also track your progress with the S-Health app. The Gear Sport, in addition, is also MIL-STD-810G certified so it can technically survive harsh environment. The Gear Sport, according to Samsung, is not a Gear S3 replacement. With the newly launched Gear Sport, Samsung is only looking to give — fitness conscious — buyers one more option to invest in its fitness/smart wearable technology ecosystemIf that wasn’t enough, the Gear Sport, can also be used to stream workout videos to a Samsung TV and remote controlling a Gear VR headset. In terms of hardware specs, the Gear Sport, unlike the Gear S3, comes with a smaller 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a 360×360 pixels resolution which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. Just like the Gear S3, the Gear Sport also comes with a Full Colour Always-On Display mode — taken from Samsung’s Galaxy range of phones — which, according to Samsung, allows the screen to display 16 million colours even during sleep mode. The fitness/smart wearable is compatible with any 20mm watch band, and Samsung will additionally sell its own hand-crafted straps for it.The Gear Sport is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor clubbed with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, much like the Gear S3. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC (for Samsung Pay) and GPS.Just like the Gear S3, the Gear Sport also runs Tizen-based Wearable Platform and features a round dial with a rotating bezel, deeply integrated with the wearable’s Tizen OS. Sensors on-board the Gear Sport include: accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyro, and a continuous heart-rate monitor.Unlike the Gear S3 however, the new Gear Sport is backed by a smaller 300mAh battery, but it is still rated to deliver up to four days of battery life on moderate usage. The Gear Sport is compatible with all Android smartphones running Android 4.4 and upwards with 1.5GB+ RAM with support. It is compatible with iOS devices like the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6S, 6s Plus, SE, 5 as well provided they’re running iOS 9 and upwards.Gear Fit 2 Pro adds enough incremental upgrades over the Gear Fit 2 to warrant an upgradeThe Gear Fit 2 Pro may seem like an incremental upgrade to the Gear Fit 2, but make no mistake, Samsung’s new fitness wearable packs in enough incremental upgrades over the Gear Fit 2 to warrant an upgrade. For one, the Gear Fit 2 Pro comes with a new buckle clasp instead of the unwieldy peg-and-hole closure on the original Gear Fit 2. Also, the Gear Fit 2 Pro comes in small and large sizes and has a 1.5-inch curved AMOLED screen which may be smaller than the one on-board the original, but packs the same punch as far as colours are concerned.advertisementMore importantly, the Gear Fit 2 Pro gets both the 5 ATM as well as the MIL-STD-810G certifications, just like the Gear Sport, which means that it’s swim-proof and can withstand harsh environment. A new feature on the Gear Fit 2 Pro, called water lock mode, meanwhile avoids an errant screen — preventing water bubbles from activating or interacting with the screen — while swimming while still keeping track of your swimming patterns. The Gear Fit 2 Pro, in addition, supports GPS, continuous heart rate monitoring and comes with 4GB of on-board storage enough to store up to 500 songs.
R Ashwin has predicted an India vs England World Cup 2019 final at Lord’s on July 14. India and England are being considered two of the hottest favourites in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.Speaking at Salaam Cricket 2019, R Ashwin said India would be overwhelming favourites against Pakistan on June 16 at Old Trafford. Like Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, who spoke at Salaam Cricket earlier in the day, said Pakistan will find it nearly impossible to defeat India in their World Cup clash two weeks from now.Ashwin echoed Harbhajan Singh’s views and said India are far more superior than Pakistan.”History says India always win against Pakistan. Looking at the balance and their batting prowess and the way India have been bowling in recent times, I can’t think much beyond India winning the game. Even Pakistan can punch a hole in India’s batting, then that is the only chance they have.”India are favourites – Rohit and Virat are the two best batsmen in the world. Our balance – the emergence of Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav and Bumrah – the smaller role of Jadhav has been incredible over the last two years,” Ashwin said and added he predicted an India vs England final. However, former Pakistan captain Younis Khan said it was not easy to pick any favourites in a tournament like the World Cup.”Everyone has an equal chance to win the World Cup. Yes, India are looking very balanced but Australia and New Zealand are dangerous teams. I want an India vs Pakistan final,” he said.advertisementYounis Khan said it was difficult to ever predict an India vs Pakistan match but he hoped for an exciting match.”You can never predict India vs Pakistan matches. It should be a good match. Adelaide 2015 was one-sided for India. Even the CT final was one-sided for Pakistan. I hope it is a close match,” he said.ALSO READ | Sourav Ganguly changed India into a ruthless ODI team, says Nasser HussainALSO READ | India will be under pressure, Pakistan have nothing to lose in World Cup: Harbhajan SinghALSO WATCH | Salaam Cricket 2019: Gavaskar clarifies 1983 US tour plan, Warne picks his favourites, and more
