Beds offer therapuetic solutions for shelter

first_img Plans underway for historic Pike County celebration Remember America’s heroes on Memorial Day By The Penny Hoarder Donna Schubert, Founders Society chair, isn’t sure who was more excited about the Kuranda pet beds that were delivered to the Troy Animal Shelter on Thursday, the dogs or Animal Control Officer Ken Andress.“Ken was very excited about the beds and the dogs were all over them,” Schubert said. “We’ve received 11 beds and several others are to be shipped. When they arrive, we’ll have enough beds for all 16 kennels at the animal shelter.”The Kuranda beds are made of a vinyl material and are on frames that sit about six inches off the floor. The beds are designed in such a way that the dogs cannot chew the material so they will last longer. Book Nook to reopen Troy falls to No. 13 Clemson Email the author Latest Stories Beds offer therapuetic solutions for shelter Published 8:16 pm Saturday, March 7, 2009 Print Article “From 1 until 3 p.m., we’ll have the shelter dogs available for people to get to know and, hopefully, take home,” Schubert said. “We had a wonderful time at last year’s event and had several on-site adoptions. Even the dogs that weren’t adopted enjoyed playtime in the outdoors. We are looking forward to this year’s event and the opportunity for people who are considering adoption to be engaged with the animals. And, hopefully, we’ll be able to sign some adoption papers.” Schubert said members of the Pike Animal Shelter realized that the dogs at the shelter were spending 24 hours a day on the concrete floor of the kennel.“The dogs had to sleep on the concrete and, of course, it was often damp because it was hosed down in cleaning,” she said.Susan Green, a dedicated volunteer with the Pike Animal Shelter, had seen Kuranda-type pet beds at an animal shelter in Atlanta and suggested them as a possible solution. Sponsored Content “We had thought about some type of stuffed bedding but that would get wet and soggy and ruin,” Schubert said. “When Susan told us about the Kuranda beds, that seem liked a solution. The beds sit off the floor and provide circulation in addition to giving the dogs a dry and much more comfortable place to rest and sleep, so they are in a much healthier environment.”The Kuranda pet beds were purchased through donations and Schubert expressed appreciation to all of those who helped make the animal shelter a better place for homeless pups as they wait for caring people to adopt them. The Pike Animal Shelter is doing what it can to make life better for shelter dogs. On March 21, the Pike Animal Shelter will sponsor a Bow Wow Pow Wow adoption event for shelter animals at Murphree Park in Troy. ‘Big Damn Movie’ on the Big Damn Screen: Firefly / Serenity at the UPP

Posted on by

first_imgThe film, which came to be known in-production as “the Big Damn Movie”, was very well-received, topping the box-office in the UK, and achieving an average rating of 81% on film review site Rotten Tomatoes. The showing, therefore, is an excellent chance to catch this supreme slice of sci-fi gold on the big screen once more: and trust me, it is worth it for the space-chase set-pieces, which are far better executed here than the over-CGI’d clutter of the Star Wars prequels. It is possibly unsurprising that the series did not get the required ratings in the distant lands of our American cousins: those expecting another fast-paced, sexed-up teenage vampire-slaying fest à la Buffy and Angel were in for a disappointment. Here was a smart, dare I say character-based, “western in space” in which all the principal protagonists were, shock horror, over 25 years old. And it certainly didn’t help, considering the emphasis on gradual character progression, that Fox aired the 12 episodes (of 14 filmed) in the wrong order, back in its first showing in 2002. The premise runs thus: in the future, where most planets seem to be colonised by a cross-breed of Americans and Chinese, veteran (for the losing side) Captain Mal Reynolds and his 4-man crew are dodging the Federation which now controls the galaxy, and are forced to scavenge off shipwrecks in space in their creaky-but-reliable little ‘Firefly’ vessel, Serenity (you see the TVàfilm link? Genius). Having picked up a suspicious young doctor and his mysterious cargo, however, they suddenly find themselves on the run from the all-pervasive law. “Serenity” is effectively the same, save for the fact that it is set after the series (or at least the 14 episodes filmed) and their enemy is a very specific one: a zealous hit-man known only as The Operative, whose one purpose is to track down and recapture Reynolds’ fugitives. Its history is unprecedentedly sweet; in the aftermath of Firefly’s cancellation, the loyal fans who had seen its potential cried out as one, and set about converting, via the power of DVD, all their friends, families, everyone they knew to the ‘Browncoats’, a devoted online community who would fight and fight hard for Firefly’s return. In June 2003, their call was answered, as Whedon, Nathan Fillion (who plays Mal) and Adam Baldwin (who plays resident idiot tough-nut, Jayne) confirmed on the official forum that they were working on a film which would satisfy fans’ desire for closure. I’ve just heard that some members of OU staff are screening the feature-length pilot of Joss Whedon’s show Firefly at the Ultimate Picture Palace on Saturday, back-to-back with the 2005 film “Serenity”. For those of you who haven’t heard of Firefly, shame on you; you can be partially forgiven since the series, thanks to its premature cancellation in the States, was never broadcasted on our shores. But the word-of-mouth success of the DVD set and the hype of the spin-off film Serenity should have caught you by now. However, it is the series that really shines: the film necessarily has a very different feel and pace to the episodes, which don’t need to worry so much about exposition. In the film you get none of the great every-day scenes which take place around the ship’s dinner table (for example) in the series, which let the play-off of the characters really shine: Mal’s paternal attitude to his crew tempered by his need of brutality to survive, versus Jayne’s lust for action and wealth, no matter what the cost for his companions; the strange, strained co-existence of the priest, Book, with the refined prostitute, Inara; or the awkward tension between the Captain’s old friendship with fellow-veteran Zoe and her beloved husband, Wash. For fans too, therefore, seeing the pilot episode of the series on the big screen would be too shiny an opportunity to miss. Especially considering the screening is in aid of Equality Now, a charity supported by Whedon himself, this comes as a highly recommended event. Port Authority to hold study evaluating rapid trans-Hudson service

Posted on by

first_img× SECAUCUS – Could the long discussed idea to bring New York City’s No. 7 subway line to Secaucus be approaching reality? The Port Authority (PA) has sought Request For Proposals (RFP’s) from consulting agencies last month to help plan for a study assessing additional rapid trans-Hudson service. The Port Authority is carrying out the 18 month study in collaboration with New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), NJ Transit, and New York City. It aims to find an option to supplement the existing trans-Hudson network, and prepare for an anticipated ridership surge between both states, post 2040.The agency is concerned about the trans-Hudson network’s future ability to serve Manhattan’s Central Business District, along with developing centers in the region, including Hudson County, Newark, Downtown Brooklyn, and Long Island City.According to a study the PA commissioned in 2015, between 2010 and 2040, the agency expects a 50 percent increase in total peak-ridership using trans-Hudson transit. That same study also said that a No. 7 train extension could reduce demand for bus access to the Port Authority Bus Terminal by 25 percent by 2040.“This study is intended to augment the region’s current and programmed long-term planning program by examining multiple potential options including possible extensions of the existing transit networks of NJ Transit, the Authority, and the MTA…” the PA said, in its RFP document. The PA has previously studied extending the MTA’s No. 7 train line from its Manhattan terminal at 34th Street between 11th and 12th Aves to Secaucus Junction. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg first proposed the idea in 2010. However, the MTA shot down the idea, saying it would be too costly. But with federal funding for the Gateway Program – a multi-state and agency effort to rehabilitate the current North River Tunnel, and add another trans-Hudson rail tunnel – not likely to materialize, could extending the No. 7 line be the best alternative?Possibly, but not anytime soon. According to Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton, speaking at a Crain’s New York event Feb. 27, an extension probably wouldn’t start until after the Gateway Project finishes in 2030. If it ever finishes, that is.last_img read more

Government Evacuates Venezuelan Prison after Fatal Prison Riot

Posted on by

first_imgBy Dialogo January 29, 2013 An urban prison located in northeastern Venezuela was evacuated on January 27, after a fatal prison riot in which 58 people were killed and dozens were injured according to medical sources, the government informed. Venezuelan penitentiaries are known for unsanitary conditions, overcrowding, and violence, and in several cases they are controlled by heavily armed gangs of prisoners that belong to criminal organizations and constantly generate confrontations between inmates. “The evacuation of convicts in Uribana prison has concluded. Now, we aim at reconstruction,” Minister of Penitentiary Affairs Iris Varela, who has not submitted an official statement yet, said in her Twitter account. “Last group of prisoners found during the first inspection in Uribana!” the minister posted in the social network, and uploaded a photo that showed several inmates with military officers. The minister reported the decision of completely evicting Uribana penitentiary, an operation that was finally carried out “peacefully” in the early morning of January 27, and in which inmates did not resist. “All of them are leaving the premises, without resisting. They are leaving in an orderly way, they wait patiently, then we pat them down, we examine them(…) and we determine which prisons they have to go to,” Varela told state television station VTV in the early morning. Furthermore, she indicated that “a deep inspection” will be performed now on the premises before its reconstruction, and so that prisoners can return. On January 25, an inspection aimed at finding weapons in Uribana caused a group of inmates to start a prison riot. The convicts “attacked National Guard members,” according to the minister’s initial statements. There were 58 victims and 90 injured, who have already been discharged from the Antonio María Pineda Central Hospital, informed Ruy Medina, head of the hospital who was in charge of handling the emergency. On January 25, Venezuelan Vice President Nicolás Maduro ordered an investigation of the prison riot, considered one of the most violent episodes in the history of the country’s penitentiaries in recent decades.last_img read more

Brazilian Navy Frigate ‘Constituição’ Returns from Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon

Posted on by

first_img After spending nine months on the peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, emotions ran high in Rio de Janeiro’s Naval Base (BNRJ) on the morning of August 31st with the arrival of frigate “Constituição.” Since January 2013, it has been the main flagship of the Maritime Task Force (MTF) for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). By Dialogo September 09, 2013 The MTF-UNIFIL was created in 2006 in accordance with the United Nations Security Council Resolution in response to the request of the Lebanese government. It is the first UN peacekeeping mission that has a Maritime Task Force, currently led by the Brazilian Navy. Frigate “Constituição” participated in a multinational group formed by eight ships, two German ships; two ships from Bangladesh; one from Greece; one from Indonesia; and one from Turkey. Neuci Alves Mendes, mother of Petty Officer Third Class Bruno Alves Mendes, was proud of her son’s career. “I feel a sense of accomplishment as a mother, and I am relieved because God brought him back safely.” Mendes commented on the challenges he faced during the mission. “Especially in the beginning, it was difficult to get used to the distance, the language and the new culture. We also felt homesick, but we constantly kept the mission goal in mind.” The main task assigned to the Brazilian frigate in Lebanon, along with the other resources, was to intercept the influx of unauthorized weaponry into Lebanese territory via Maritime Interdiction Operations. Meanwhile, Brazil contributed by training the Lebanese Navy to exert control over their judicial waters. Longing for their loved ones, family members and friends celebrated the arrival of 250 soldiers when they disembarked from the ship. Signs, t-shirts, cheers, smiles, tears, and the display of anxiety for an embrace at the reunion were all over the BNRJ. Five-year-old Arlon de Souza Andrade, son of Petty Officer Third Class Adonai Shalon Lima de Souza, said: “I want to squeeze him really tight now!” November 14, 2011 entered Brazilian naval history as the day when the first Brazilian Navy war ship was incorporated to a UN peacekeeping mission (Frigate União). Frigate “Constituição” was the third ship to fulfill this mission, and it was replaced by frigate “União” in the area, before it returned to Brazil. Being far away from his family members was also a challenge for Commander Marcos Ulisses Diniz Sobreira. “The most difficult thing to control was how much we missed our family during the nine months that we were apart.” According to Cdr. Sobreira, the performance of the ship and its military crew was recognized by the United Nations (UN). “It was a pleasure to help the Lebanese people. The objective of the mission was to contribute to the peace in Lebanon, preventing the influx of weapons to minimize an increase in violence. I can guarantee that we have a sense of accomplishment and that we have represented the traditions of the Brazilian Navy.” Peacekeeping Mission Frigate “Constituição” departed from Rio de Janeiro on December 4, 2012, with a crew of 250 marines from which 210 were from the ship; 14 from the Onboard Air Detachment; 18 from the Marine Corps Reaction Group against the Asymmetric Threats; and eight were Combat Divers.last_img read more

Leaders as stewards of human capital

Posted on by

first_img 21SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Stuart R. Levine Founded in 1996, Stuart Levine & Associates LLC is an international strategic planning and leadership development company with focus on adding member value by strengthening corporate culture.SL&A … Web: www.Stuartlevine.com Details In a healthy culture, leaders at all levels of the organization become stewards of human capital. Leadership becomes the single most important human-capital issue, as good leadership drives organizational health, which in turn drives profitability. It requires a commitment from the top, starting with the CEO, and must permeate every level of the organization. It is essential that leadership development programs be seamlessly integrated into an organization’s culture. Too often, however, this is not the case. They frequently are short-term, sporadically funded and viewed as non-critical expenditures. U.S. companies spend plenty on these programs (about $14 billion annually), however, what is often referred to as “leadership development” is simply the purchase of “one-off” solutions” that do not help in the creation of an organizational culture of continuous learning and leadership development.Adding to this challenge, succession planning and the building of leadership pipelines, key responsibilities of management and boards, is in short supply in most organizations, often to the point of negatively impacting strategy implementation. According to a recent Deloitte survey, only 32% of organizations have succession planning for top level employees, and an unacceptably low 18% consistently hold their leaders accountable for recognizing and developing successors. Just 6% of respondents feel they have “excellent” programs for Millennial leadership development (employees in their 20’s and 30’s), despite the fact that 53% of Millennials strive for leadership positions. In a healthy culture of organizational learning and leadership development, leaders at all levels must continuously focus on recruiting, identifying and developing future leaders. It is no longer just the responsibility of HR or senior management. It becomes ingrained in the fabric of the organization, and leaders are held accountable for this responsibility, and rewarded for its success. This involves the delegation and support of effective learning by serving as coaches and mentors to increase the leadership capacity of their team. In this “leader as teacher” model, they make sure their team members gain relevant experience by providing challenging stretch assignments designed to help them grow and gain the competencies necessary for success in their current and future roles within the organization. Through introspection and emotional intelligence, leaders examine their own behaviors and belief system to assure that their mindsets are not inhibiting the growth of their direct reports. For example, some managers may believe in “command and control leadership”, which results in counter-productive behaviors such as a reluctance to delegate, or an avoidance of providing challenging stretch assignments, resulting in a failure to develop leadership capacity within an organization.Millennials represent a particularly important group. They are the next generation of leaders, requiring the knowledge, tools and experiences to develop the competencies necessary for effective leadership. The most effective development methods combine structured classes (e.g., in-person, on-line and webinars) with real life projects and regular feedback. Adults typically retain only 10% of what they hear in a classroom, while learning through real-life work experience has about a 60% retention rate. Organizations maximize learning when structured classes that teach theory and best practices are applied to stretch assignments involving actual projects that must be delivered on time and on budget, while being coached and mentored by experienced leaders. It seems that 20% classroom learning combined with 80% real world experience tends to be the ideal blend. This mix of multiple method competency development results in engaged performance, lower turnover, improved effectiveness and increased job satisfaction.Measuring the effectiveness of leadership programs is analogous to accounting for any business investment. The organization must appreciate the value of investing in people, often referred to as their greatest asset, and arguably the largest differentiator between organizations. Data-driven assessments can help evaluate a program’s effectiveness by measuring leadership qualities and competencies before and after these ongoing programs.  Since leadership development is not a “one size fits all” and must be carefully integrated into the organizational culture, there must be a continuous evaluation of what works best and what changes are needed for continuous improvement. What is painfully clear is that an organizational focus on leadership is directly linked to long-term success, where the organizational culture drives higher productivity and the organization becomes more effective in achieving strategic objectives and delivering increasingly positive resultslast_img read more
