The number of Brits booking cheap flights to Spain

first_imgThe number of Brits booking cheap flights to Spain will ensure the country becomes the UK’s most popular holiday destination in 2010.This is according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), which predicts that Spain will remain number one in spite of the growing popularity of Turkey and Egypt.AITO spokesman Ian Bradley explained that Turkey and Egypt are continuing to be discovered by Brits, partly due to the fact that they lie outside of the eurozone.”But we know that by the end of the year, Spain will once again be by far the most popular holiday destination,” he commented.”[Customers] need to bear in mind that many hotels throughout the eurozone, particularly in Spain, have slashed their prices.”Mr Bradley also said that the Easter weekend is one among the busiest times of year for the travel industry and is regarded as “the curtain raiser to the summer”.Figures from the International Air Transport Association published this week showed that demand for international flights increased by 9.5 per cent in February compared to the same month in 2009, which spells good news for airlines as summer approaches.ReturnOne wayMulti-cityFromAdd nearby airports ToAdd nearby airportsDepart14/08/2019Return21/08/2019Cabin Class & Travellers1 adult, EconomyDirect flights onlySearch flights Map RelatedFewer European visitors leads to ‘more enjoyable’ continental holidaysPeople booking flights to Europe this year are having a more enjoyable time because of the fewer number of visitorsSpanish destinations will become popular again in the long-term, AITO saysSpanish destinations will become popular again in the long-term, AITO saysBrits booking cheap flights to Europe this EasterBrits booking cheap flights to Europe this Easterlast_img read more

(Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP, File) center_img LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Documentaries about Robin Williams, Gloria Allred and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a Lizzie Borden film with Kristen Stewart and Debra Granik’s long-awaited follow up to “Winter’s Bone” are among the 110 features set to premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The Sundance Institute announced the diverse lineup of films Wednesday for the annual festival held in Park City, Utah. Festival programmers say the films this year highlight the stories of alternative voices and points of view, including films by and about women, and the experience of African-American men in the world right now.The African-American experience is highlighted in competition films like “Blindspotting,” a buddy comedy starring Daveed Diggs, and “Sorry to Bother You,” a dystopian tale about a telemarketer with Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. Both are from Oakland-based filmmakers.“I think they’re going to make really big splashes,” said Trevor Groth, the director of programming for Sundance. The festival premiered Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” in a special screening last year.Films with complex female characters include “Lizzie,” a psychological thriller about Lizzie Borden starring Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny as Borden, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” about a girl who is forced to go to therapy for her sexuality, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, and “The Tale,” about a woman reevaluating her first relationship starring Laura Dern. “Star Wars” star Daisy Ridley also stars in “Ophelia,” a female-focused spin on Hamlet.Granik, whose last feature “Winter’s Bone” earned Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar nomination and ostensibly catapulted her to stardom, is back with her first narrative feature in over seven years — an untitled film about a father and daughter living in a secluded nature reserve in Oregon starring Ben Foster. The domestic documentary competition includes a timely film called “Seeing Allred,” which focuses on the women’s rights attorney’s life and taking on both Bill Cosby and Donald Trump. Others include a Hal Ashby portrait, “Hal,” and a look at the deportation of 1,200 immigrant miners living at the Arizona-Mexico border in 1917 (“Bisbee ’17”).Documentary premieres, a section that has in the past unveiled “An Independent Sequel” and “Going Clear,” has a film about the life of Robin Williams told mostly through his own voice, “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” a look at Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, “RBG,” and a Fred Rogers documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbour.”Actor Idris Elba also makes his feature directorial debut with “Yardie,” a thriller about a boy who sees his brother’s assassination in 1973 Jamaica. Ethan Hawke “BLAZE”, Paul Dano (“Wildlife”) and Rupert Everett (“The Happy Prince”) are among other actors who directed films that will premiere at the festival.“The work of independent storytellers can challenge and possibly change culture, illuminating our world’s imperfections and possibilities,” said Sundance founder Robert Redford in a statement. “This year’s festival is full of artfully-told stories that provoke thought, drive empathy and allow the audience to connect, in deeply personal ways, to the universal human experience.”The Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan. 18-28. Additional selections will be announced in the coming weeks.___Follow AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ldbahrlast_img read more

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci) Video of cop killer becomes Trump campaign push by Jonathan Lemire And Zeke Miller, The Associated Press Posted Nov 1, 2018 10:37 am PDT Last Updated Nov 2, 2018 at 6:40 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Emailcenter_img WASHINGTON – The widows of two police officers the Mexican immigrant murdered were invited to President Donald Trump’s 2017 address to Congress. The conservative Breitbart News faithfully chronicled his conviction and death sentence. His snarling, expletive-filled rant about killing police officers appeared in a little-noticed January 2018 Trump campaign ad.Now, Luis Bracamontes’ menacing smile has abruptly taken a central role in Trump’s closing midterm election argument about immigration as the president tweeted out a video of the Latino man’s courtroom appearance in what was immediately denounced by some Democrats and Republicans as a racist campaign tactic.Bracamontes, an immigrant living in the country illegally, sports a shaved head and long chin hair and speaks in accented English in the video, and his words are clear: He’s killed cops and he’s “gonna kill more cops soon.”The video , which Trump tweeted late Wednesday, alleges without evidence that Democrats were responsible for allowing Bracamontes into the U.S. It comes amid a frenzy of hardline immigration proposals pushed out by Trump in the final stages of the campaign, including sending troops to the border and revoking birthright citizenship.Bracamontes, a twice-deported immigrant from Mexico, was sentenced to death in California for the 2014 killings. The 53-second video includes expletives uttered by Bracamontes during his trial as he professed regret at not killing more officers.“Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes, killed our people!,” the video states, adding, “Democrats let him into our country … Democrats let him stay.” It includes scenes of a migrant caravan moving toward the U.S., warning ominously, “Who else would Democrats let in?” and suggesting that more violence would soon penetrate the border. The ad was reminiscent of the infamous “Willie Horton” ad used against Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis in 1988 and condemned as racist. Horton, who was black, raped a woman while out of prison on a weekend furlough. As Massachusetts governor, Dukakis supported the furlough program. Dukakis went on to lose to Republican George H.W. Bush. The video tweeted by Trump did not immediately appear to be running on television — it has a runtime longer than most TV ads — although it received extensive coverage on cable news networks. As of Thursday afternoon, it had received 3.51 million views in less than 24 hours and was the “pinned” tweet atop Trump’s profile, meaning it was the first thing any visitor to his Twitter page would see.The White House and the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comments as to who made or paid for the video or if any tax dollars were used to run it from the president’s account.“This is a sickening ad. Republicans everywhere should denounce it,” said Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, a frequent Trump critic. And Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., seeking re-election in a Democratic-leaning South Florida district, said he’d not seen the video but criticized Trump’s use of it.“I can tell you that it’s definitely part of a divide-and-conquer strategy that a lot of politicians, including the president, have used successfully in the past,” Curbelo said Thursday on CNN. “I hope this doesn’t work.”Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called the new ad the “dog whistle of all dog whistles.”“This is distracting, divisive Donald at his worst,” Perez said on CNN. “This is fearmongering.”The dark video stood in stark contrast to an ad circulated by the Trump campaign earlier in the week that highlighted rosy economic numbers and depicted gauzy scenes of American suburban life. That ad was part of a blitz by Trump’s campaign, and his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, did several interviews to promote it.As for the new video, though, the campaign was silent Thursday and Parscale did not respond to requests for comment. But the Trump campaign was behind the January 2018 video, released on its YouTube page, that featured Bracamontes’s courtroom appearance. That video was timed to the one-year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration and meant to promote his immigration agenda. The previous year, Jessica Davis and Susan Oliver, the widows of Detective Michael Davis and Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver, were invited to Trump’s address to Congress. Bracamontes’ case — he was sentenced to death in March — also received steady coverage on Breitbart and other right-wing news sites.Trump has long promoted the alleged danger presented by those living in the country illegally, although statistics show they do not commit crimes at a higher rate than citizens. During his 2016 campaign, he frequently appeared with so-called “angel families” — those who lost loved ones at the hands of immigrants in the nation illegally.___Follow Lemire on Twitter at http://twitter.com/@JonLemire and Miller at http://twitter.com/@zekejmillerlast_img read more

No Future. No Sun,” by The Smashing Pumpkins. (Napalm Records via AP) The Smashing Pumpkins, “SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN.” (Napalm Records)It’s no question The Smashing Pumpkins has had a tumultuous past. Multiple iterations, breakups and solo careers later, three founding members of the 90’s Chicago-rooted rockers — Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin — are back to release their first collaborative album in 18 years, “SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN.”The title of the LP is fitting, considering there’s a past the band likely wants to leave behind. The Smashing Pumpkins has teetered between dissolution and reconciliation since 1996, after the overdose death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and the firing of Chamberlin. Members have been in flux ever since, with the current roster featuring Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin with guitarist Jeff Schroeder.Ahead of their latest tour, one founding member, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, was left in the dark. The circumstances surrounding her exclusion from the band’s reunion started a feud between Wretzky and Corgan, complete with publicized text message screenshots and name-calling.Peel away the dramatics and dysfunction that marked the launch of “SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT” — and the Pumpkins’ past, for that matter — and you’re left with an album that stays true to the band’s classic sound with the help of legendary producer Rick Rubin.Triumphant strings and distorted vocals open the album, as “Knights of Malta” crescendos to a choir singing with the guttural Corgan singing, “We’re gonna make this happen/I’m gonna fly forever.”While the album captures the nonconforming spirit of eccentric frontman Corgan — swinging between manic, obsessive and edgy tracks like “Solara” and delicate, trance-like songs such as “With Sympathy” — overall, “SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT” is no masterpiece. Songs build then fizzle, like “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts),” a catchy tune lacking the chorus to be considered vintage Smashing, despite its nostalgic and distinctive Pumpkins feel.Highlights on the 8-track album include “Travels” and “With Sympathy.” The optimistic “Travels” affirms the album’s commitment to “No Past. No Future.” in a fluid reality where Corgan sings, “See love, see time/see death, see life” before unfolding into a chorus of, “It’s where I belong/but far from here or else I’m gone.” There’s an element of opacity, common to Pumpkins lyrics, but one that manages to feel pleasantly unresolved by the anthemic track. “With Sympathy” pleads, “Please stay confused/disunion has its use,” but wraps itself in a comforting, steady melody.“SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT” brings hope that the band’s dark days are distant. Millions of Pumpkins fans certainly hope so.Ragan Clark, The Associated Presslast_img read more
