Jacks’ women in exhibition action tonight

Posted on by

first_imgTake a look at the 2018-19 Humboldt State women’s basketball roster and three things immediately stand out: The size added to what was a, problematically at times, short 2017-18 roster, the lack of depth on this year’s 8-person roster and the absence of the Jacks’ leading scorer from a year ago, Tyla Turner.“It’s unfortunate, she was a big part of what we did last season,” Humboldt head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson said. “But, she is no longer with our team.”Turner was dismissed from the team …last_img

Tourist arrivals continue to grow

Posted on by

first_img6 September 2010Foreign visitors to South Africa increased by more than 350 000 in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2009, says Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk.Speaking ahead of the launch of Tourism Month last week, Van Schalkwyk said that from January to April this year, foreign arrivals totalled more than 2.5-million, compared to approximately 2.2-million in 2009, representing a growth of 16.3 percent.“Our foreign arrivals continue to reflect the consistent growth of our tourism industry, and I have no doubt that 2010 is going to be a very successful year,” he said.Domestic tourism“We have always understood, however, that the backbone of any tourism industry is its domestic market. We will continue to promote the richness of our destination to South African travellers, and during Tourism Month we have a particular focus on showcasing our local tourism offerings,” he said.Approximately 14.6-million adult South Africans undertook about 30-million domestic trips in 2009, with a total annual spend of more than R22-billion. In 2009, 75 percent of all tourist volume in South Africa was derived from domestic tourists, making it by far the biggest segment of the industry.Van Schalkwyk said the figures were also less volatile than foreign tourism and offered the industry and the country’s economy a steady income stream.“South African Tourism’s Sho’t Left campaign is specifically aimed at making travelling more accessible and affordable for all South Africans. Over the last six years we have invested approximately R70-million … underlining the fact that we are serious about strengthening domestic tourism as the foundation of our industry.”South Africa will also commemorate World Tourism Day on 27 September, this year’s theme being “Tourism and Biodiversity”.“In South Africa, the majority of our tourism offerings are rich in biodiversity,” said South African Tourism CEO Thandiwe January Maclean.” It is important for each and every South African to preserve this in order to ensure that we have a sustainable tourism offering.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

South African fathers develop baby ‘survival kit’

Posted on by

first_img30 April 2014Two South African fathers have adapted a 1930s Finnish design to come up with a box aimed at supporting South African mothers with newborns. The Thula Baba Box will be made out of plastic and will include essential items, such as clothes, sheets, nappies, health products, and toys. The box itself can double up as a cot, a bath or be used to safely store items.Crucially, the box will also contain information targeted at mothers, as well as incentives to encourage expectant mothers to visit antenatal clinics earlier and more frequently. The project is being driven by De Villiers, a marketing executive, and Hertzog, founder of Action Hero Ventures, a “very early-stage angel fund” based in Stellenbosch that invests in creative and technology start-ups.The pair, who are both fathers, say the box aims to improve the overall wellness of mothers and babies.‘Amazing example’The concept is based on a 1938 initiative by the Finnish government that supplied expectant mothers with a similar box. The box is credited with helping to decrease Finland’s infant mortality rate from 65 deaths for each 1 000 children born in 1938 to 3 deaths per 1 000 births in 2013, Action Hero Ventures say on their website.“We thought the Finnish box was an amazing example of design that changed a nation,” said Hertzog. “We hope that, given some tweaks, our product will have just as much of an impact.”The project is being run in partnership with the Western Cape Government Department of Health, the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University, and the J-PAL Africa Incubation Fund, which has provided funding.“We are looking forward to seeing the impact of the study [by health economists at Stellenbosch University] on lower-income families in the Western Cape,” De Villiers said.PotentialIt is expected that the box will be distributed to mothers throughout the Western Cape by 2016 and to the rest of South Africa by 2020.The project has been selected as an official 2014 World Design Capital Cape Town project.“We find it encouraging that two fathers are proactively engaged in a collaborative initiative to improve the lives of both babies and mothers in the Western Cape,” Tracey Naledi, chief director of health programmes, said. “We encourage such initiatives that are particularly aimed to support the first 1 000 days of life, and are excited to see the results of the study.”Ronelle Burger at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Economics, said the project had great potential to improve the lives of mothers and babies as it not only distributed products and information, but also offered incentives to change behaviour.“Similar schemes have been successful in promoting health in other countries and we that this study will provide useful inputs for policy making, but also contribute to ongoing international research on the role that incentives can play in promoting better health choices,” Burger said.SAinfo reporter and World Design Capitallast_img read more

A Quick Guide to Steadicams

Posted on by

first_imgOnce mastered, Steadicam is a great way to get professional stabilized footage. In this post, pick up a few tips for Steadicam success.Video from our previous post on the Art of the SteadicamWhat is a Steadicam?A Steadicam is a camera rig that is uniquely designed to stabilize camera shake. First created in the 1970’s, the Steadicam quickly took Hollywood by storm, as a better option for shooting smooth tracking shots. Haskell Wexler was the first to use the Steadicam in the 1976 film Bound for Glory –  that year’s winner of the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.Steadicams can make your footage look incredibly professional but can be a bit complicated to setup properly. Let’s take a quick look at Steadicams – how they work and the different options available. Why Would I Need a Steadicam? If you’ve ever tried to keep an unstabilized camera steady, you know that no matter how steady you might feel, the footage is still going to end up a bit shaky. Using a weight to counterbalance the camera, a Steadicam can get rid of unnecessary shake and obtain smoother footage. How much smoother are Steadicam shots? Check out this comparison video:The footage from the Steadicam isn’t 100% stabilized but compared to the handheld footage it’s not even close. Now you may be asking…How Do I Setup a Steadicam? There are a lot of factors to consider when setting up a Steadicam including:Back weightsFront weightsChoosing the right pegHorizontal stabilizationVertical StabilizationLens weightLens focal lengthCamera WeightAll of these factors can be a bit overwhelming to someone new to working with a Steadicam. But thankfully the folks at CheesyCam have created a quick video demonstrating how to properly set up a Merlin Steadicam, a popular lightweight model that’s ideal for DSLRs and small cameras.Skip to 1:22 to get to the start of the tutorial. How Much Do Steadicams Cost?Commercial Steadicam systems can cost anywhere from $400 for small lightweight models to $60,000 for the top-of-the-line heavy Hollywood options. The cost really depends on your budget and need.If you aren’t up to spending hundreds of dollars on a rig than you can build your own Steadicam for only $30 via Matt Chapman.More Info on SteadicamsSetting up your Steadicam is only half the challenge. It takes years of practice and experience to become a master Steadicam operator (which is why it is a sought after, well paid position in film and television). On Your Competitors and Pricing

Posted on by

first_imgWe spend an awful lot of time and energy worrying about our competitors. You need to know how they create value, how they compete, and how they win so you can give them a good fight. But beyond that, you aren’t going to beat your competitors by playing their game; you are going to beat them by playing your game. You can’t win a fight with someone who is willing to die to beat you. So, you don’t fight that fight. They Will Go Where You Won’tWhen I was a young kid, I hung around with the roughest of rough crowds. Some of my friends were gifted fighters. Some were just mean. It never seemed to matter how much skill someone had when it came to fighting, the guy that won the fight was the guy that was willing to go someplace the other guy wasn’t willing to go.Some guys were willing to dish out more damage; they never felt bad about doing it either. They were just mean guys. Other guys were willing to put themselves in harm’s way to win. They were willing to bring themselves close to serious physical harm just to win. This is what you are up against.Doling Out PunishmentSome of your competitors are willing to destroy their business model faster than you are willing to destroy your business model. If your business model isn’t built around lowest price and you compete that way, your competitor is doling out the punishment. By trying to follow them and winning on price, you are destroying your profitability—and with it your ability to deliver for your clients. This isn’t your fight. If you built your value proposition on trust, caring, and delivering for your clients, this is the fastest and surest way to destroy what you’ve built. It might look like you are winning, but I promise: you are really losing.Willing to Die to WinSome of your competitors are willing to go out of business faster than you are willing to go out of business. That’s not a race you should try to win.I know some companies that have sold price for so long, their debt is now approaching their annual revenue. They’ve acquired. Their cost structures have increased over time. Now they are straddled with debt and all they can do is try to feed the beast more revenue. They continually fail their clients, and everyone inside the company is miserable and stretched. These stories never end well—for the company, for their clients, or for their employees. As it turns out, you actually need profits to survive. Why would you want to fight this fight? You are better off being a smaller, profitable, company than you are a giant, poorly performing, client-disappointing, loss-making machine.Sometimes it’s best to walk away from a fight. You never lose a fight that you never engage in. Instead, play your game better than anyone else.QuestionsDo you compete against companies that are destroying their model by selling price? How do you avoid following them down this path?Who do you compete against that is trying to go out of business faster than you? How do you let them win that race? What game should you be playing? How do you stick to your game and not get goaded into a fight that’s not for you? Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close.
