Biman resumes DhakaDelhi flights after 5 yrs

Posted on by

first_imgAn aircraft of Biman Bangladesh AirlinesBiman Bangladesh Airlines resumed Dhaka-Delhi-Dhaka direct flights Monday after nearly five years with three flights a week initially as India’s private Jet airways halted its flight operations between the two capitals recently. The resumption flight landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport Monday afternoon while Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali received the arriving passengers through flowers at terminal-3 of the airport at 5.20pm (local time).A spectacular water cannon salute was given to the aircraft when it landed at the airport with 150 passengers aboard. A cake was cut on the gate premises to mark the occasion. The passengers including some in wheel chairs expressed their satisfaction after travelling by Biman’s Dhaka-Delhi direct flight saying that it would immensely reduce their sufferings which they had to face while travelling via Kolkata.Earlier in Dhaka, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, M Mahbub Ali, inaugurated the flight before it took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 3:00pm.Ali hoped that Biman would be able to make profit form Dhaka-Delhi direct flight as the national flag carrier is now the lone airline on this route. He said the government is committed to turn the national flag carrier into a profitable venture through providing standard on time service to the passengers.Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary M Mohibul Haque, Biman’s board of directors chairman Air Marshal (retd) Muhammad Enamul Bari and acting managing director and CEO Captain Farhat Hasan Jamil also spoke while Indian deputy high commissioner to Dhaka Bishwajit De were present on the occasion.Biman suspended its direct flight operation on Dhaka-Delhi route in September, 2014 citing aircraft shortage in its fleet although the decision irked the Bangladeshi passengers as thousands of people from the country travel to India every year for medical, business and tourism purposes.Biman Bangladesh Airlines has initially decided to operate three flights (Monday, Thursday and Saturday) in a week on its Dhaka-Delhi route by its 162-seat Boeing 737-800. According to the schedule, the Biman flight will depart Dhaka at 3.00pm and arrive in Delhi at 5.20pm and accordingly, it will depart from Delhi at 6.20pm and arrive in Dhaka at 9.20pm.The round-trip fare in the route is approximately Taka 24,000 in Economic Class and Taka 65,000 in Business class. The ticket price of Biman is much lesser compared to Jet Airways, the only airways which operated Dhaka-Delhi Direct flights.Jet Airways, the India’s Premier Aviation Company in private sector, has grounded all its 119 aircraft and suspended all domestic and international operations recently due to “fund shortage”.There was no Dhaka-Delhi direct flight after the suspension of Jet Airways operations on all domestic and international routes. As a result, passengers have to take trouble during their travel to India. In absence of direct flight passengers have to travel on Dhaka-Delhi-Dhaka via Kolkata taking more time. There are other airliners like Air India, Spice Jet and Indigo that operate their Dhaka-Delhi flights via Kolkata.last_img read more

New Amazon Channels Data Shows Why Apple Wants to Copy It

Posted on by

first_imgAmazon launched Channels as an add-on program for Prime Video subscribers at the end of 2015, and has since continuously grown the number of video services available through channels. The company also briefly experimented with selling its own niche video services through Channels, but gave up on that strategy earlier this year.Sources at participating video providers have long told Variety that Amazon has become a massive reseller, easily outpacing Google’s and Apple’s app stores. The success of Amazon’s program also hasn’t been lost on Apple, which is reportedly looking to resell standalone video subscription services via its TV app on Apple TV and mobile devices. However, those plans may not materialize until next year, according to a recent Bloomberg report.“Amazon has quietly built a stronghold in the burgeoning direct-to-consumer market,” said TDG president Michael Greeson. “Even with Apple’s pending entry into this space, we expect this dominance to expand further in the next five years.”One advantage that Apple may have over Amazon is pricing: Amazon Channels is currently only available to Prime subscribers, who have to pay $119 per year after Amazon’s recent price increase. Apple on the other hand is expected to make its Channels clone available without any additional fees. However, it’s worth noting that the relative size of these subscription services inevitably leads to small sample sizes, which can result in significant variation. HBO’s online service surpassed 5 million subscribers this year, while Showtime has more 5 million subscribers together with CBS ALL Access.A Showtime spokesperson told Variety after the initial publication of this story that the percentage reflected in this survey for Showtime was significantly off, but declined to comment on Amazon’s actual share. CREDIT: Courtesy of The Diffusion Group Update: This post was updated multiple times with further details on The Diffusion Group’s methodology as well as a statement from Showtime. Amazon has quietly become a major player in the subscription video sales business: Amazon Channels, the company’s platform for reselling subscription services like HBO and Showtime, now accounts for 55 percent of all a la carte direct-to-consumer video subscriptions, according to new data from The Diffusion Group (TDG).53 percent of all consumers who don’t get HBO through their pay TV provider are purchasing it via Amazon channels, TDG estimated in a new report titled The Future of Direct-to-Consumer Video Services. Those numbers are apparently even higher for some of the other TV networks: 72 percent of Showtime subscribers get the network’s direct-to-consumer offering via Amazon Channels, and 70 percent of Starz a la carte subscribers receive it from Amazon. The Diffusion Group arrived at these estimates by surveying a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adult broadband users. “We used an online panel comprised of several million double opt-in respondents, one of the largest in the country, and added multiple quality checks to best ensure accurate outcomes,” explained the company’s president and director of research Michael Greeson.
