New York Post Under Scrutiny For Ridiculous Article Title

first_imgNew York Post article says Johnny Manziel receiver admits to randomly killing jogger.new york post title johnny manzielIt’s become common practice for online publications to beef up article titles in an attempt to lure in readers. What you’ll see below is a little beyond the realm of what’s considered acceptable, however.Monday, reports surfaced that former Texas A&M wide receiver Thomas Johnson – who played for the Aggies for one year – had admitted to murdering a man in Dallas on a jogging trail. Tuesday morning, the New York Post went with a very questionable title for its version of the story.I mean, come on @nypost. pic.twitter.com/DEsvuU9DyU— Barrett Sallee (@BarrettSallee) October 13, 2015Johnny Manziel, obviously, has nothing to do with the story. So far, the publication hasn’t backed down and changed its title. But it hasn’t been getting a very favorable response on social media.last_img read more

Report: Leonard Fournette’s Family May Have Broken NCAA Rules

Posted on by

first_imgLeonard Fournette talks during an interview.YouTube/LSU Tiger TV YouTube/LSU Tiger TVYouTube/LSU Tiger TVLSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette is the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy this year, given the fact that he’s rushed for 1,352 yards and 15 touchdowns in just seven games. But according to USA TODAY, his family could be in a bit of trouble with the NCAA regarding a website that was launched back ahead of the 2014 season.According to the publication, a website dedicated to “BUGA Nation” – which stands for “Being United Generates Attitude” – was launched with the intent to sell tee shirts and hats to the public. Fournette “helped develop” the acronym. Here’s more:Paul Price, described by Fournette’s mother as the family’s manager, made payments of about $10,000 to build a website and produce the merchandise to be sold, the owners of three companies involved told USA TODAY Sports. The owners said they gave Price and the Fournettes more than $20,000 in discounts because they expected strong sales driven by the star running back’s popularity. Even with the discounts, one of the business owners said he has yet to be paid in full. The website launched the week of LSU’s 2014 season opener, but the business went no further — sales of T-shirts and hats were stopped within 24 hours after the NCAA learned of its existence, according to Lory Fournette.Clearly, the issue here is that players and their families are not allowed to profit off of an athlete’s likeness, image or name. Will this lead to NCAA issues for LSU and Fournette? At this point, it’s hard to say. You can read the entire article over at USA TODAY.last_img read more

first_img LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Advertisement Twitter Few have achieved such remarkable success in as many different fields as Geena Davis has. She is not only an Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actor best known for her roles in iconic films such as The Accidental Tourist, Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Ownand for her portrayal of the first female President of the United States in ABC’s hit show Commander in Chief, but also a world-class athlete (at one time the nation’s 13th-ranked archer), and a member of the genius society Mensa. She was appointed Special Envoy for Women and Girls in ICT for the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and is also an official partner of UN Women, working toward their goal of promoting gender equality and empowering women worldwide. first_imgFORT NELSON, B.C. – On March 30, the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality met for the final deliberations of the 2019 Budget.According to the Regional Municipality, the budget was subject to a significant evaluation period where Council had over a month to review the Preliminary Budget that was presented to the public at an Open House on February 13.The Municipality says the budget was formulated to meet several council objectives: Support existing levels of servicesReduce the tax levyMaintain full provincial Infrastructure Development Contribution Agreement (IDCA) fundingContinue to focus on efficienciesThe annual property tax levy has been reduced from $24.4 million to $20.2 million since 2015. first_imgCanadian farmers and producers now have preferential market access to an estimated 1.5 billion consumers in more than 50 countries, with the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).According to the Government of Canada, they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Canadian producers and want to ensure they have the support they need. The Government shares they are prepared to respond to support producers of other commodities should further trade actions occur.Strong and stable markets for our high-quality Canadian canola means more money in the pockets of our farmers and supports good, middle-class jobs for Canadian farm families. The Government of Canada will not rest until this issue is resolved for our Canadian producers, workers and communities. The announcement by Minister Bibeau shares, the Government intends to amend the Agricultural Marketing Programs Regulations to temporarily increase loan limits under the Advance Payments Program (APP). These changes will help ease cash flow pressures that farmers are facing and help them manage the impacts of market disruptions in key export countries. The regulatory amendment would change the loan limits for the APP for the 2019 year as follows:Advances of up to $1 million will be available on all commodities, more than double the previous limit of $400,000.The first $100,000 will remain interest-free on all commodities, except canola. We are ensuring that farmers have the security they need leading into this year’s season to help manage their cash flow, giving them the flexibility to sell their canola at the best time and at the best price. Our government will always stand up for Canadian interests and support hardworking farmers as we work closely with the grains sector, exporters and provinces to secure unrestricted market access for Canada’s high-quality canola”, said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.As well Minister Carr announced that he will be leading a canola trade mission to Japan and South Korea in early June. Through our new trade agreements, Canadian businesses—including exporters and agri-food producers—now have preferential market access to an estimated 1.5 billion customers around the globe. China is blocking development in South China Sea through coercive means: Pompeo

Posted on by

first_imgWashington: The US has accused China of blocking the ASEAN members accessing more than USD 2.5 trillion in recoverable energy reserves in the South China Sea by illegal construction activities. China claims almost all of the South China Sea. Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims over the area. “China’s illegal island-building in international waterways is not simply a security matter. By blocking development in the South China Sea through coercive means, China prevents the ASEAN members from accessing more than USD 2.5 trillion in recoverable energy reserves,” Pompeo said in his address at CERAWeek in Houston Tuesday night. To contrast, the US Government promotes energy security for those Southeast Asian nations, he said in his address to one of the largest gathering of global energy leaders. “We want countries in the region to have access to their own energy. We want to help them. We want to create partnerships. We want transparent transactions, not debt traps. We explore responsibly,” he said. But, China does not play by that same set of rules, he alleged. “Its values are simply different. You see that in places as diverse as Africa, where they often ship in their own labour, creating jobs for Chinese workers rather than for those in the local economy,” he said. “It’s using the debt trap which I referred to just a moment ago to put these countries in a place where it is not a commercial transaction, it’s a political transaction designed to bring harm and political influence in the country in which they’re operating,” Pompeo said. “And we all know the story in Russia,” he said. It invaded Ukraine to gain access to oil and gas reserves. It in turn deprived Ukraine of the possibility of developing those resources for itself and using its pipelines and its networks to bring energy to its own people. Rather, it uses those pipelines to put pressure political pressure on the people of Ukraine, he alleged.last_img read more

Gasping for clean air

Posted on by

first_img“I love the feeling of fresh air on my face and the wind blowing through my hair.” These lines by Evel Knievel describe a feeling of living on love, literally, and nurturing a heart filled with happiness and contentment. However, the reality is a little different from what we actually envisage from these fulfilling words. This “fresh air” is killing seven million people every year and causing irreparable damage to several billion and has been described as the “new tobacco” by none other than the head of the World Health Organisation. India is home to seven of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world with South Asia battling deteriorating air quality and the economic toll it is expected to take worldwide. According to reports, the life of a South Asian child born today will be shortened by two years and six months growing up in current high levels of air pollution, while the global life expectancy loss is 20 months. What is more alarming is that millions of deaths are taking place from stroke, diabetes, heart attack, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases. Also Read – A compounding difficultyAnother major concern is that researchers have analysed the experiences of more than 2,000 17-year-olds and found that those in places with higher levels of nitrogen oxides had a 70 per cent higher chance of symptoms such as hearing voices or intense paranoia. People growing up in cities were already known to have more psychotic experiences than those outside urban areas. Toxic air is one potential cause. Also, the disparity between less and more developed countries is very wide and amounts to developing countries suffering PM2.5 exposures that are four to five times those of more-developed countries. It is not just the outdoor air which is the ticking time bomb but the household air pollution is another key issue. Almost 3.6 billion people are estimated to be exposed globally, coupled with the double whammy for the health of those also experiencing high levels of outdoor pollution. Also Read – An askew democracyA recent study titled ‘State of Global Air 2019’ shows the impact of air pollution in the world. More than 90 per cent people worldwide live in areas exceeding WHO guideline for healthy air. More than half live in areas that do not even meet WHO’s least stringent interim target for air quality. Concerted efforts have shown positive results and air pollution has begun to turn a corner in many South Asian countries, especially China. What is needed is a definite and up-scale action plan to urgently respond to this challenge. In a nutshell, the need of the hour is urgent policy formalisation which equitably reduces pollution — both indoor and outdoor, and their strict implementation to make this world a livable place.last_img read more
