Legends demand dissolution of WICB

Posted on by

first_img The statement from the former West Indies cricketers pointed to structural reforms to the Australian, New Zealand, India and England and Wales cricket boards, while accusing the WICB of resisting “all recommendations for structural change”. “In recent years, it has rejected the proposals of the Lucky, Patterson and Wilkin Committees,” the legends said. “And a few months ago, it did the same thing to the recommendations of the WICB/Caricom Committee.” The legends’ statement also said: “We believe that revival of West Indies cricket will only happen when the Board undergoes structural adjustment and when it improves the quality of its communication and leadership and upgrades the management of key relationships.” Pressure has been mounting on Cameron’s WICB to step down after Sammy’s emotional criticism of the board minutes after the regional side regained the T20 World Cup in India recently. The legends, who led a dominant era when West Indies were world beaters, said they are bent on protecting their rich legacy. “Throughout our history, West Indies teams and West Indies players have had great triumphs. We are very proud of our legacy,” the statement said. “We cannot now in good conscience stand idly by and watch everything that we fought so hard to build and achieve disappear right before our eyes because of the actions of inept board members and an incompetent board.” ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC): West Indies cricket legends are demanding the “immediate resignation” of the Dave Cameron-led West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), in line with the recommendations of the WICB/Caricom Governance Review Panel. The legends are also insisting on the establishment of an interim board and the creation of a new structure to replace the WICB and manage the regional game. In a statement released after a meeting in Grenada, the legends have called for the WICB to honour a promise that it made to accept the recommendations of the WICB/Caricom Governance Review Panel. WICB had given a commitment to implement the recommendations during a meeting with the legends and Caricom chairman, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, in Grenada year ago, but has since been accused of reneging. “We, the Legends call on the WICB to honour its solemn promise to Caribbean prime ministers in April 2015 to accept and implement the recommendations of the WICB/CARICOM Governance Review Panel – the immediate resignation of current directors, the establishment of an interim board and the design of a new board structure,” the legends said in a statement released late Monday. Legends participating in the meeting at the Spice Island Beach Resort last Thursday were Sir Gary Sobers, Sir Wes Hall, Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Andy Roberts, Deryck Murray, Charlie Griffith, Desmond Haynes, as well as former West Indies players Dinanath Ramnarine and Roger Harper. West Indies men’s T20 captain, Darren Sammy and sports psychologist, Dr Rudy Webster, also attended. The legends’ statement also called on Caricom to appoint an independent auditor to carry out a detailed forensic audit of the board and requested that sponsors of West Indies cricket make good governance a condition for financial support. “Continual backing of an inefficient board and an out-of-date structure will result in irreparable damage to West Indies cricket,” said the statement. During their meeting in Grenada, the legends also held discussions with Prime Minister Mitchell, chairman of Caricom’s subcommittee of Cricket Governance. “We are satisfied that Caricom has no intention of engaging in the day-to-day management of West Indies cricket. Caricom’s aim is to help create a structure and an enabling environment in which West Indies cricket can develop and flourish,” the statement pointed out. “During the last two decades, many different presidents and CEOs have led the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), and yet, its performance has declined steadily with each passing year. The board is an oligarchic structure that considers itself answerable to no one but itself.” STRUCTURAL REFORMSlast_img read more

Boys’ Town, Waterhouse hopeful of signing Thompson

Posted on by

first_img He continued: “So I am not thinking about myself. It’s to see the youths really prevail. So it is not the issue of Arnett Gardens’ internal problems why I am saying this. I am doing this on my own terms.” On Thompson’s Facebook page, many comments suggest that he will return home to assist struggling Boys’ Town, who are floundering at the foot of the table. Others say he may go to Waterhouse FC to help new coach Glendon ‘Admiral’ Bailey lift that team from relegation troubles, but Thompson says that we will just have to wait and see. “Options have been presented, but I always want to win. I still think Arnett have a team to win the Premier League. We just have to fit things in, and sometimes you have to do things to really get the reaction from players. But we will be looking at how we can improve as we are looking in the direction where we belong. “But I have to look into things and be realistic. It (move) might be a possibility and it might not be. We just have to wait and see. But when the time come, you will know,” he said. ON HIS OWN TERMS Oneil ‘Bigga’ Thompson’s recent Facebook post that read “think I am going to leave Arnett Gardens in a few weeks” has been much cause for concern among Arnett Gardens fans, while another set of supporters are hoping the big centre-half will be joining their club. Thompson left his hometown club Boys’ Town FC for Trench Town rivals Arnett in January 2013. After four years playing at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, the 33-year-old told The Gleaner that he would not mind taking his experience and leadership elsewhere. Since making the post, Thompson said that he has been flooded with offers, but he is still undecided if he will leave the 2014-2015 champions in the January transfer window.. “It’s a general statement. Sometimes, you have to take time out to address some concerns when things are going the way it is. But it all depends on the position you are in at time when you are making that statement as things can change. But I have not confirmed anything as yet, I haven’t really spoken to any other teams, but a few people have called me and are interested in the development of their team. “So where football is concerned, it’s about helping football in the country, not just your team, because one team alone cannot help the football in the country,” he commented. The recent players’ pay cut that has unsettled Arnett Gardens over the last month or so has not influenced Thompson’s decision to look at other options. “I am not affected by the changes. It might impact how we (the club) go about things. But in every organisation, you have changes and transformation. But I do not worry about money in a certain sense. I just like to know that I contribute and help the youths excel.”last_img read more

first_imgThe Rotary Club of Monrovia recently embarked on its Annual Charity Basket project for 2014.  As one of its cornerstone community service activities, the Club has raised money to donate needed items to the elderly and less fortunate in Monrovia and its immediate environs. This year’s donations were made to two institutions, namely the E.S. Grant Mental Health Hospital and the Antoinette Tubman Cheshire home. Some of the items in this year’s donation include plastic buckets, tubs, bowls and cups, cleaning supplies, bales of clothing, mosquito nets, towels, slippers and toys among others with a total value of L$100,000 (one hundred thousand Liberian dollars). The Rotary Club of Monrovia is the local chapter of Rotary International, a community service organization established in 1905 to foster the ideals of service among professionals in their communities of work and life.  First established in Liberia in January 1964, the Club is proud to be celebrating 50 years of service in Liberia under Rotary’s global motto of “Service above Self.”Rotarians continue to set themselves apart by encouraging high ethical standards in their respective professions building goodwill and peace and— above all— dedicating their time to providing humanitarian services to fellow citizens.According to the Club’s Service Projects Chairperson, Monique Cooper-Liverpool, “Rotarians in Liberia have been involved in a variety of projects ranging from the provision of medical supplies and equipment to the JFK medical centre and pediatrics ward, the establishment of a reading room in Brewerville and a water/wells project bringing safe drinking water to 14 communities around greater Monrovia, to name a few. The Club’s flagship project has been the construction and furnishing of a 6 classroom school block in Ben Town community along the Marshall Highway.”The president of Rotary Club of Monrovia, Milton Weeks, noted, “With a membership of forty-five professionals both Liberian and international, the Rotary Club of Monrovia will continue to serve its community to the best of its ability.” Later this year, Liberia will host Rotary’s annual West African Projects Fair; bringing together hundreds of Rotarians from around the world to forge new project partnerships for development assistance and service projects across the region.  This is the first time Liberia will be hosting such a large international Rotary event. The Fair will be held in Monrovia from 29 October – 5 November, 2014.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
