San Beda coach livid over disqualifying foul on Bolick

We want to know what happened, why they called it for Robert? Why? They have to justify it,” he said.Fernandez then turned his ire towards commissioner Bai Cristobal, noting that the official could have handled the matter better knowing that decisions made from that situation gravely impact some of the players’ career in the long run.Bolick is in the running for the Most Valuable Player plum, with him currently sixth in the race with averages of 13.56 points, 7.56 rebounds, and 4.67 assists. He also posted a near triple-double performance in the game with 14 markers, 11 dimes, and seven boards, but him being sent to the showers in the game against St. Benilde already rules him out of any individual plum at the end of the season.ADVERTISEMENTcenter_img Catriona Gray spends Thanksgiving by preparing meals for people with illnesses “Why would you throw him out? God, it’s so bad. It’s wrong. (We had) six fouls in fourth quarter and the other team only has one foul, and then that happens. They tackle a player? Should he be thrown out? Yes, it should be an [ejection]. But why penalize the other guy?” Photo by Tristan Tamayo/ INQUIRER.netSan Beda coach Boyet Fernandez leapt to Robert Bolick’s defense after he felt his star playmaker was unjustly ejected in his team’s 72-56 win over St. Benilde on Tuesday.“You have to see that. McGraw became just the sixth women’s coach to be enshrined.“I’m grateful for Title IX and the opportunities that it’s given to women like me, who dreamed of a future where we could do the same job as a man, where playing a game could lead to a 40-year career,” she said.Lobo told a story about when her oldest daughter, Siobhan, was 5 years old and saw her father watching a UConn men’s game. She said to him, “I didn’t know boys play basketball too.”Self, 54, told The Associated Press he feels a little uncomfortable being enshrined in the middle of his career, which includes nine 30-win seasons and an NCAA championship in 2008“I hope it doesn’t mean that I’m on my last leg yet,” he said. “I think this will be motivation to try and validate it, always. Australia enter WC quarterfinals with win over Kenya

Posted on by

first_imgInspired by Michael Clarke’s 80-ball 93, Australia produced a splendid batting display to notch up an emphatic 60-run victory over Kenya in their Group A match and ease into the quarterfinals of the cricket World Cup in Bangalore on Sunday.Clarke and fit-again Michael Hussey (54) forged a fifth-wicket partnership of 114 runs to help Australia post a challenging 324-6 after losing three wickets for just 16 runs to be 143-4 at one stage.Collins Obuya (98 not out) and Tanmay Mishra (72) starred in Kenya’s runchase but they never looked to be in the hunt and were restricted to 264-6 as Australia stretched their unbeaten run at the World Cup to 33 matches.Australia is now placed third in the group A table, which is headed by New Zealand after their win against Canada in Mumbai today. Sri Lanka is at the second spot with seven points from five matches.Australia will now take on Canada and Pakistan in their last two league matches.Chasing 325 to win, Kenya were reduced to 46 for three but Collins and Mishra shared a 155-ball 115-run partnership to lift Kenya to 161 for four.Collins added another 86 runs off 72 balls with Thomas Odoyo (35) but in the end it proved too tall a mountain to climb for the Kenyans at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.Fast bowlers Brett Lee and Shaun Tait dealt the initial blows, removing openers Maurice Ouma (4) and Alex Obanda (14) to reduce Kenya to 21-2 in four overs.A terrible mix up between Obuyo brothers cost David his wicket as the minnows slumped to 46-3 in 9.4 overs but Collins and Mishra ensured there were no more hiccups and brought up the hundred in 20.6 overs.advertisementThe 24-year-old India-born Mishra blasted eight fours and a six en route to his second World Cup fifty before falling to a brilliant run out by Clarke in the 36th over.Collins and Thomas Odoyo then took Kenya across the 200-mark with a 86-run partnership after taking their batting powerplay between the 42nd to 46th over, were they scored 49 runs without losing a wicket.Tait claimed the last wicket of the day, cleaning up Thomas in the 48th over, while Collins remained unbeaten with a career-best score of 98 in the end. His 129-ball innings was laced with nine fours and three sixes.Tait was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Lee accounted for one wicket.- With PTI Inputslast_img read more

Ponting says he urged Dravid not to retire

Posted on by

first_imgFormer Australia skipper Ricky Ponting claims that he persuaded Rahul Dravid against retiring when he was written off after a string of low scores last year and the in- form Indian batsman has reciprocated the support by inspiring him during his lean patch.Dravid, the lone Indian batsman to perform well in with three centuries and 461 runs in the team’s recent 0- 4 Test whitewash at the hands of England, was woefully out of form last year and Ponting said he encouraged the veteran right-hander carry on despite the criticism.”I remember after our last series in India there was a lot of talk and speculation about Dravid being finished,” Ponting told a cricket website.”I actually went and found him at the end of the series and said ‘don’t you even think about retiring’ because I just saw some stuff in a few of his innings that suggested he was still a very, very good player.”I just said ‘don’t let them wear you down, don’t let them get you down’. I received a similar text message before and after the Ashes from him as well,” he added. The 36-year-old Ponting has not scored a Test century since January last year but he is confident of regaining his touch and he is looking up to Dravid for inspiration.”There are a few ( who provide an inspiration for batsmen of advancing years).Sachin (Tendulkar) and (Jacques) Kallis both had a great last year; Dravid is doing well now. It’s not only good for guys of my age to see guys doing that, it’s good for the younger blokes to see it as well; to know that if you keep doing the right things and work hard, and if you’ve got talent, then age is not a barrier in our game,” he said.advertisementSpeaking about the state of the game in general, Ponting said he is worried about the impact of Twenty20 on youngsters.”The big worry I’ve had about Twenty20 cricket and even other shorter forms of the game being played at really developmental times in kids’ careers is that it won’t teach them the art of concentration.”Cricket for me when I was growing up meant batting until someone got me out, and if that took them a week then that’s how long it took them,” he said.”Now, even Under-17s and Under-19s are playing T20 games in national championships, and at the detriment of two- day games. Good state players these days are averaging 35; if you were averaging 35 when I was playing your dad would go and buy you a basketball or a footy and tell you to play that. So there are areas of concern there; I don’t know how you change them,” he explained.Asked about India’s slide from the top of ICC rankings after the debacle in England, Ponting said it would be interesting to see how Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men do once the veterans retire.”India still haven’t reached that point that I thought they’d get to yet. They’ve still got that crux, those great batters in that side. Time will tell with India now. Dravid was probably one who was in the gun before the rest of them and he’s found a way to come through,” he said.”They (Tendulkar, Dravid and VVS Laxman) are all about the same age and they won’t go on forever. They will be tested more than anything with their bowlers.”- With inputs from PTIlast_img read more
